Unit: Inpatient Surgery (Med/Surg)

Overview

• Unit Size: 46 beds

• Layout:

  • Large unit with nurses’ stations at both the front and back

  • Design supports communication and oversight across both sides of the unit

Patient Demographics

• Age & Gender: Varies widely; no specific demographic profile

• Common Conditions:

  • General post-operative patients

  • Frequent pain management needs

  • Chest tubes

  • NG tubes

  • Heparin drips

  • Dressing changes

  • JP drains

  • Traction

Staffing and Support

• Nurse-to-Patient Ratio:

  • Maximum of 6:1

• Staffing Model:

  • Charge nurse oversees the unit and may carry a smaller patient assignment

  • Nursing assistants are scheduled

  • Nursing assistants may float off the unit or provide 1:1 support for confused patients as needed

Common Diagnoses Treated

• Post-operative care

• Urology

• Neurology

• Bariatric surgery

• Plastic surgery

• Orthopedic surgery

• Mixed acute medical patients

Procedures and Treatments

• Frequent administration of pain medications

• IV medications and continuous drips

• Wound vac management

• Total parenteral nutrition (TPN)

• Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD)

• Dressing changes

• Continuous bladder irrigation (CBI)

Technology and Equipment

• Monitoring and Diagnostics:

  • MASIMO non-invasive monitoring

  • Bedside monitoring systems

  • EKG machines

  • Bladder scanners

• Patient Care Management Software:

  • EPIC

Certifications Required

• Basic Life Support (BLS)

Documentation Requirements

• Q4h vital signs

• Q8h intake and output

• Pain assessments

• Shift assessment

• Full admission assessment for new patients, including:

  • Acceptance note

  • Two-RN skin assessment

  • Belongings check (documented)

• Fast-paced environment with frequent bed turnover

• Requires adaptability and strong time-management skills

• Expect frequent medication administration and diverse treatment protocols

• Familiarity with unit technology and procedures is highly beneficial

Pay Rate
$67.89 - $72.76/hour
