Registered Nurse (RN) – Critical Care Float Pool
Department: Critical Care Float Pool

Position Summary

The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Critical Care Float Pool provides specialized pediatric critical care nursing services across multiple intensive care units. This role requires flexibility to float daily between critical care areas based on operational needs and patient census.

Primary Clinical Areas

The RN will support the following units:

Thomas Main Campus

  • Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
    • Level I Trauma Center
    • Liver and kidney transplant services
  • Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU)
    • Cardiac transplant services
    • Congenital heart defect care
  • Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
    • Level IV NICU
  • Acute Care Units (as needed)

Arrowhead Campus

  • Multispecialty Unit (MOSU)

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care in PICU, CVICU, NICU, and MOSU settings.
  • Float daily between Thomas Main Campus and Arrowhead Campus based on staffing needs.
  • Cross-divisional floating to acute care units may be required.
  • Serve as the first resource to float during shift adjustments.
  • Deliver high-quality pediatric critical care nursing while maintaining patient safety and clinical excellence.

Floating Requirements

  • Required to float between:
    • PICU
    • CVICU
    • NICU
    • MOSU (Arrowhead Campus)
  • May float to acute care units when needed.
  • Will not be required to float to:
    • Emergency Department (ED)
    • Inpatient Psychiatry
  • Assignment includes both Main Campus and Arrowhead locations.

Schedule Requirements

  • Every other weekend required.
  • Minimum of:
    • 2 Mondays and
    • 2 Fridays
      within each 6-week scheduling period.
  • Schedule will be integrated into the hospital's staffing model.

Orientation & Onboarding Requirements

  • Complete all Learning Management System (LMS) modules independently before assigned deadlines.
  • Welcome letter and schedule information are typically provided the Thursday or Friday before the start date.
  • Failure to complete onboarding requirements by the Thursday before the start date may result in a two-week postponement.
  • Required pre-employment 12-panel drug screening, including Fentanyl testing.
  • All certifications must remain active throughout the contract period.

Required Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of experience as a Registered Nurse in Pediatric Critical Care.
  • Pediatric intensive care experience required.

Preferred Experience

  • Level III or Level IV NICU experience.
  • Children's hospital experience.

Education Requirements

  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

Licensure Requirements

  • Current Arizona RN License; OR
  • Active RN license from a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) state with multistate privileges; OR
  • Eligibility to obtain Arizona licensure prior to start date.

Required Certifications

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) – American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) – American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)

All certifications must be active before the start date and maintained throughout the assignment.

Vaccination Requirements

  • COVID-19 vaccination is recommended but not required.
  • Influenza vaccination is required annually from October through April.
  • Approved flu vaccine exemptions must be obtained prior to start.
  • Employees declining COVID-19 and/or influenza vaccination must sign the required Declination & Masking Protocol agreements and comply with masking requirements during respiratory virus season.

Pay Rate
$73.46 - $78.34/hour
