Job Summary

The Respiratory Therapist (RRT) provides advanced-level respiratory care to patients to diagnose, evaluate, treat, manage, and control deficiencies and/or abnormalities of the cardiopulmonary system within the physician's prescribed orders.

This position serves as a resource to Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) staff and may be responsible for special clinical projects or assignments as designated by leadership based on departmental needs.

Job Responsibilities

Clinical Care & Assessment

  • Performs, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic testing procedures according to established protocols.
  • Obtains arterial blood gases.
  • Oversees and troubleshoots respiratory equipment to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Initiates Respiratory Protocols according to departmental criteria.
  • Initiates appropriate interventions based on assessment findings.

Medication Administration

  • Administers respiratory medications in a timely and safe manner.
  • Evaluates treatment effectiveness and reassesses patients according to protocol.
  • Communicates patient progress to staff, physicians, and other departments.

Patient Monitoring & Communication

  • Maintains awareness of assigned patients' overall condition.
  • Communicates and shares patient information with physicians and nurses.
  • Makes appropriate recommendations regarding patient care.

Patient & Family Education

  • Identifies educational needs of patients and families related to health promotion and wellness.
  • Teaches patients and families self-care techniques and treatment modalities.

Documentation & Resource Management

  • Completes documentation according to departmental standards.
  • Accurately records productivity information.
  • Monitors supplies and equipment and notifies the appropriate personnel when supplies are low, on loan, or malfunctioning.
  • Utilizes time effectively to meet productivity standards, including using low-census time productively when patient volumes do not support full productivity.

Quality & Patient Safety

  • Participates in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
  • Identifies opportunities to improve processes and enhance patient satisfaction.
  • Recognizes potential safety hazards affecting patients and staff and takes appropriate corrective action.
  • Participates in departmental meetings and contributes ideas and feedback.

Leadership & Professional Development

  • Promotes the Respiratory Care profession and serves as a resource, consultant, and mentor to staff within the department and patient care areas.
  • Supports the development of colleagues through education and guidance.
  • Participates in quality improvement and research activities to support the development of patient care standards.

Additional Responsibilities

  • May be required to float to other departments within the scope of competency and qualifications based on business needs.
  • May be required to take on-call assignments during regularly scheduled shifts.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Pay Rate
$66.40 - $71.28/hour
