Department: L&D/PP/MB (LDRP)
- Unit: Womens Services Elmore Hospital
- # of L&D Beds: 1 labor room and 1 LDRP room. Labor nurse will follow the pt and take as a couplet.
- # of OR Suites on the unit for C-Sections: done in OR- L&D RN will attend c-sections as baby nurse
only will not circulate.
- # of Triage beds: 2
- # of Postpartum beds: 2
- # of Births per year: 200 per year on average
- Do you follow AWHONN guidelines for ratios: 1:1 laboring, 1:3 couplets. 2 RNs on per shift.
- Required Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP, STABLE
- Common diagnoses/Types of patients: Level 1 Maternal and Newborn Care- well mothers and well
baby nursery; laboring patients for spontaneous labors, inductions of labor, and cesarean sections all
transitioning to full couplet care upon delivery. This unit also covers L&D triage, performs routine non-
stress tests, and inpatient/outpatient newborn hearing screens.
- Experience or 'Must have' skills: Minimum of one year Labor & Delivery, Postpartum, newborn nursery,
and OB Triage. Okay with first time travelers. Prefer RNs have MedSurg experience and be willing to
float to MedSurg.
- Are RNs required to titrate drips: Yes
- Common titratable &/or set rate drips: Oxytocin and mag
- Is there a Charge Nurse on each shift: Charge RNs are on each shift. Supervisors available on 11 out of
14 shifts.
- Are there nurse aids/surgical techs on this unit: CAP is shared between med/surg and Women's
Services.
- OB/Neonatologist in house 24/7: OB docs on call- if oxytocin rate is greater than 20 have to be readily
available.
- Anesthesia in house 24/7?: CRNAs are readily available- have a 30 minute call back time- have never
waited the full time.
- RT Equipment: CPAP.
- Are there Tele/Monitor Techs on this unit: Tele available if needed. No monitor techs, RN would need
to read strip- resources available for assistance in interpreting if necessary.
- EFM System: Centricity
- Shifts & Scheduling: 12 hour shifts, 7-7 Leadership schedules travelers. Grouped scheduling wherever
possible. Scheduling preferences are usually met.
- Weekend Requirements: Minimum five weekend shifts per six week schedule period, may be more
based on unit needs and staffing. Day shift weekend shifts are Saturday or Sunday. Night shift weekend
shifts are Friday and Saturday.
- Holiday Requirements: Yes- based on unit needs
- Is there a call or standby requirement: No.
- Floating Requirements: Yes- will be asked to task in MedSurg if Women's census is zero. i.e., answer call
lights, pass water, answer phone, general tasking.
- Scrub Color/Dress code: No specific color as long as clean and professional- Nurse may change in/out
of hospital scrubs for their shift.
- How many shifts of unit/department specific orientation: RN receives two days of floor orientation in
addition to their POCT and Epic training.
- Additional Notes: If unit has a census of zero or 1 may be the only OB nurse in house with the other on
call- will have support from the MedSurg team. This unit and MedSurg are only separated by a double
door so there is a lot of support between the 2 units.
**This facility has a radius rule of 50 miles. To ensure adherence to this rule, we will require the candidates' perm address in the submittal to confirm they are outside of that specified radius before proceeding with the profile review.**
