RN – Labor & Delivery / Obstetrics (OB) Job Description
The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Labor & Delivery/Obstetrics unit is responsible for providing safe, patient-centered care to mothers, newborns, and families throughout pregnancy, labor, delivery, recovery, and postpartum care. The RN uses the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, coordinate, and evaluate patient care while collaborating with physicians, certified nurse midwives, anesthesiologists, lactation consultants, and other healthcare professionals.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
Patient Assessment & Care
- Assess maternal and fetal health status.
- Collect, analyze, and document patient health information.
- Monitor labor progression, fetal heart rate, contractions, and maternal vital signs.
- Identify actual and potential patient problems and develop individualized care plans.
Labor & Delivery Support
- Provide direct nursing care during labor and childbirth.
- Assist physicians and midwives during vaginal and cesarean deliveries.
- Administer medications, IV therapy, and pain-management interventions.
- Respond to obstetric emergencies and implement appropriate nursing interventions.
Postpartum & Newborn Care
- Monitor mothers during recovery after delivery.
- Assess newborn health and support breastfeeding and bonding.
- Educate families regarding newborn care, discharge instructions, and postpartum recovery.
Care Planning & Documentation
- Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized plans of care.
- Maintain accurate and timely electronic medical records.
- Ensure compliance with evidence-based nursing standards and hospital policies.
Qualifications
- Current New York State RN license.
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required; BSN preferred.
- BLS certification required within six months of hire.
- RN III: Minimum 3 years RN experience, including 1 year in a relevant specialty area.
- RN IV: Minimum 5 years RN experience with specialty-area experience and certification requirements.

Pay Rate
$71.69 - $76.57/hour
