Position Summary:

We are seeking a detail-oriented Pathology Assistant to support pathologists in the examination and processing of surgical specimens and autopsies. The Pathology Assistant will perform gross examinations, prepare specimens for histologic evaluation, ensure accurate documentation, and maintain compliance with laboratory quality and safety standards.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform gross examination, dissection, and description of surgical specimens under the supervision of a pathologist
  • Assist with autopsy procedures, including organ dissection, specimen collection, and documentation as permitted by state regulations and facility policies
  • Prepare tissue specimens for histologic processing and microscopic evaluation
  • Photograph, measure, and accurately document specimens and findings
  • Ensure proper specimen identification, labeling, and chain of custody
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and Electronic Medical Record (EMR)
  • Perform quality control procedures and maintain laboratory equipment
  • Adhere to OSHA, CAP, CLIA, HIPAA, and infection prevention standards
  • Collaborate with pathologists, histotechnologists, laboratory personnel, and other healthcare professionals
  • Participate in laboratory quality improvement initiatives and continuing education activities

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree from an accredited Pathologists' Assistant program
  • ASCP Board of Certification as a Pathologists' Assistant (PA(ASCP)) required or eligible as required by facility
  • Active state licensure where required
  • Minimum 1 year of recent pathology assistant experience preferred
  • Strong knowledge of surgical pathology, human anatomy, histology, and laboratory procedures
  • Experience with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems preferred
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and analytical skills
  • Ability to work independently and accurately in a fast-paced laboratory environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in surgical pathology, autopsy pathology, or academic medical center laboratories
  • Previous travel or contract laboratory experience preferred
  • Familiarity with CAP, CLIA, and Joint Commission standards
  • Strong teamwork and problem-solving abilities
  • Experience handling complex surgical specimens and frozen section procedures preferred

Pay Rate
$121.10 - $125.98/hour
