Job Description:

The RN for our Obstetrics Unit provides compassionate and skilled care to expectant mothers during labor, delivery, and the postpartum period. This role involves monitoring and the health of both mother and baby, assisting in the birthing process, and ensuring a safe and supportive environment for families. In the event that the Obstetrics unit does not have active patients, the RN will be assigned a patient load in the Med/Surg unit, ensuring appropriate staffing levels and continuity of care. This role requires adaptability in patient assignments, clinical expertise, and a commitment to patient-centered care across multiple units.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Include the following.
· Assure quality of care by: adhering to therapeutic standards; measuring health outcomes against patient care goals and standards; following facility standards of care set by the State Board of Nursing and other governing agency regulations. Possess knowledge and skills regarding nursing principals and practice.
· Provide comprehensive care to obstetric patients, including laboring mothers, postpartum recovery , and newborns.
· Assist with labor and delivery including fetal monitoring, medication administration, and patient education.
· Monitor maternal and fetal well-being, recognizing and responding to complication
· Educate patients and families on postpartum care, breastfeeding and newborn health
· Collaborate with physicians, midwives, and other healthcare professionals to ensure safe and effective care.
· Assess, plan and implement nursing care for adult patients with medical and surgical condition.
· Administer medications, IV therapy and wound care as per physician order
· Monitor patient progress document assessments, and adjust care plans accordingly.
· Assist with post-operative recovery, chronic illness management, and acute care interventions.
· Respond to emergencies and coordinate with interdisciplinary teams of optimal patient outcomes.
· Communicate effectively with a wide range of age groups, ethnic, educational, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
· Organizational skills, with ability to prioritize with accuracy and speed.
· Make nursing decisions within the scope of licensure and according to established hospital policies and procedures.
· Attend 75% of nursing staff meetings and other available in-service education that pertain to professional growth and development.
· Establishes a compassionate environment by providing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support to patients, friends, and families.
· Promotes patient's independence by establishing patient care goals; teaching patient, friends, and family to understand condition, medications, and self-care skills; answering questions.
· Documents patient care services by charting in patient and department records.
· Maintains continuity among nursing teams by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs.
· Delegates, and oversees, tasks delegated to nursing assistants, ESTs and Unit Clerks.

Qualifications:
The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
Education and/or Experience:
· Graduate of an approved School of Nursing required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
· Minimum of one (1) year of previous experience in obstetric nursing required.
· Experience in: Maternal / Fetal Assessment; Newborn Assessment; Postpartum Care
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
· Current Registered Nurse (RN) License in the State of Idaho or approved compact state licensure.
· Basic Life Support (BLS), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) and AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring required upon hire.
· Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required upon hire or within one year of employment.

· Is knowledgeable of patient rights and ensures an atmosphere which allows for the privacy, dignity and well-being of all patients in a safe, secure environment.
· Completes requirements for in-service training, acceptable attendance, uniform and dress codes including personal hygiene, and other work duties as assigned.
