Position Summary:
We are seeking a detail-oriented Cytotechnologist to examine and evaluate cellular specimens for abnormalities that aid in the diagnosis of cancer, precancerous conditions, and other diseases. The Cytotechnologist will prepare, screen, and interpret cytology specimens under the direction of a pathologist while ensuring compliance with laboratory quality and regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Screen and evaluate gynecologic and non-gynecologic cytology specimens for abnormal cellular changes
- Identify and mark suspicious or abnormal findings for pathologist review
- Prepare, stain, and process cytology specimens using established laboratory procedures
- Perform quality control and quality assurance activities to ensure accurate test results
- Maintain accurate documentation in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and Electronic Medical Record (EMR)
- Ensure proper specimen identification, handling, and processing
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment used in cytology testing
- Collaborate with pathologists, histotechnologists, laboratory personnel, and other healthcare professionals
- Comply with CLIA, CAP, OSHA, HIPAA, and infection prevention standards
- Participate in laboratory quality improvement initiatives and continuing education activities
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Cytotechnology or completion of an accredited Cytotechnology program
- Current ASCP Cytotechnologist (CT(ASCP)) certification required
- Active state licensure where required
- Minimum 1 year of recent cytotechnology experience preferred
- Strong knowledge of gynecologic and non-gynecologic cytology, specimen preparation, and microscopic evaluation
- Experience with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems preferred
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills
- Ability to work independently while maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in hospital, reference laboratory, academic medical center, or pathology laboratory settings
- Familiarity with ThinPrep®, SurePath®, and automated screening systems
- Previous travel or contract laboratory experience preferred
- Experience with fine needle aspiration (FNA) specimen preparation and rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) preferred
- Strong understanding of CAP, CLIA, and laboratory accreditation standards
- Commitment to quality, patient safety, and continuous improvement
Licensure / Certifications:
- Current ASCP Cytotechnologist (CT(ASCP)) certification required
- Active state licensure where applicable
- Current BLS certification preferred based on facility requirements
- Additional laboratory or pathology certifications preferred based on facility requirements
Pay Rate
$79.52 - $84.40/hour
