Position: Central Service Technician
Urgency: Quick Start
Shift: Days
Holiday Coverage: Required

The Central Service Technician is responsible for the decontamination, cleaning, processing, and sterilization of supplies and equipment dispensed by Central Service. This role requires strict adherence to procedures, the ability to work under pressure, and flexibility in performing clerical and departmental duties. The technician must maintain a high degree of confidentiality and support the organization’s mission, vision, and values.

Essential Job Functions

  • Ensure proper operation of autoclave units prior to daily use

  • Perform and document biological and chemical testing at the beginning of assigned shifts

  • Inspect gas and steam autoclaves for visible signs of malfunction

  • Decontaminate and process contaminated instruments and supplies

  • Apply sterilization principles to properly wrap and package items

  • Process items according to manufacturer instructions

  • Assist with training and in-service education for new and existing employees

  • Apply aseptic techniques in daily work

  • Store supplies and equipment in designated locations

  • Care for instruments, syringes, needles, and specialty procedure items

  • Assemble trays and prepare supplies for sterilization

  • Load, operate, and clean gas and steam sterilizers and related equipment

  • Receive, deliver, and fill requisitions for surgical supplies

  • Order weekly departmental supplies through Materials Management and vendors as needed

  • Maintain required records and documentation

  • Stay informed through meetings, policies, memos, newsletters, and email communications

  • Maintain reliable attendance, punctuality, and flexible scheduling to meet patient needs

  • Perform all duties safely and in compliance with safety policies

  • Follow the Code of Conduct and organizational policies

  • Perform other duties as assigned relevant to the department

Minimum Requirements

  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST)

  • Certified Endoscope Reprocessor (CER)

  • Basic computer skills

  • Effective communication with hospital staff, medical personnel, vendors, and service representatives

Physical Effort and Environment

  • Frequently lift up to 35 lbs independently

  • Push/pull up to 100 lbs using assistive devices

  • Prolonged walking, standing, kneeling, bending

  • Fine motor skills and manual dexterity required

  • Visual acuity correctable to 20/20

  • Normal color vision and hearing

Exposure Risk

  • Exposure Category I: Risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens

Quality Improvement

  • Maintain knowledge of hospital-wide Quality Improvement programs

  • Collaborate with management on departmental improvement initiatives

  • Participate in departmental and hospital-wide quality activities

Compliance

  • Adhere to federal, state, and local regulations

  • Follow Down East Community compliance, privacy, and security policies

  • Report compliance or confidentiality concerns to appropriate leadership

Pay Rate
